I recommend this approach and accessory to all our readers/members.Ħ. The perspective of the boat is just better- let's admit it, this is largly about "show". In this way, the boats design lines show much better, the topsides and deck are uncluttered, she rides off the dock and nothing is rubbing on my varnish. I also carry a small mushroom anchor on a short light line that I throw off the outboard side (while docked) and tie it off (usually from the windshield bracket) so she lays a foot or more off the dock. I use them MORE for securing fenders TO THE DOCK, not from my boat. I always carry two "portable dock rings" (West Marine cat.no.4527060) that slip and rotate between a docks deck boards that I can use for unusual docking conditions, cleats where I want them etc. I much prefer the very clean look to the boats with only the front step pads. My boat came to me with front AND rear step pads, these 6 fender cleats and a nice trumpet horn centered on the front deck. I needed to replace three which were the wrong size and purchased three from Perko for cheap compared to other sources that looked identical.Ĥ. One conclusion I came to was that they are CC part no. They do help putting the cover on in that as you lay it out it helps position the cover, see where you are- no big benifit.ģ. I don't see a lot of purpose in their holding the cover on once in place and they represent 6 holes for weather to enter. I have three on each side and my cover is slit for them. Folks who don't know much about boats who try and help you in docking will use these cleats for lines which they clearly are not for and you risk ripping out you deck- keep an eye.Ģ. Hi Pete- I got into a similiar discussion last year for my 49 Special Runabout and offer you several thoughts.(See fun dialogue about "Bumper Cleats" that Al refers to which had more hits than any in the Buzz.

Thus, if I were to install them, in keeping with their inclusion on the hull card, I should be more correct than not installing them.

The full canvas cover and 8 small cleats are included on my hull card. Similarly, on post-war models, 8 cleats were added IF the full cover was included on the order. However, as Bill mentioned, additional cleats were installed IF a full canvas cover was factory ordered for the '42 model. Thus, cleats were not "Standard Equipment" on post-war Deluxes. The 4 cleats were "Standard Equipment" on the 1942 17' Deluxe but are not included on this same sheet for post-war Deluxes. The "Hull Parts List" and photos show them, 2 out of 3's not bad. The list shows 2 on 20' Customs and 4 on 18', 22' and 25' Utilities/Sportsmen Models but none on the 17' Deluxe and the 16' Rocket. list (mentioned above) does not include the chokes, they're dashed out. Both the 47-7 and the 48-7 had 131 HP though.Īll of the Chris Craft issued photos I've seen show the chokes on the bow and no cleats on 17 Deluxes from '46 through '50. Model 48-5 has the 95 HP engine and they skipped the 48-6 number. Model 47-5 was equipped with the 60 HP engine but that was changed Model 48-4 in 1948. There was a Model Number change between 1947 and '48, according to the 1948 Price List and my hull card. Bring a copy to Tavares if you will.Īlso, I have the "Specifications and standard equipment for 1947 Chris Craft Runabouts and Sportsmen", not the 1948 page. There may not be much difference but if you have the same list for the 1948 model year I would like to see it. I went through my file folder (MM Packet) and found the "Hull Parts List" but the dates on mine are for "19 17 Foot De Luxe Runabout". Also, there are many known examples of cleats being omitted, so as Ron says, boats were definitely delivered without. I guess I would draw a conclusion that the same was true of the post war Deluxes, but I would really keep digging rather than lying on conclusions. However, if your boat was delivered with the "Full Canvas Cover" option, it would receive two additional #717 cleats, these being mounted amidships at the bridge between the front and rear cockpits. The four cleats were mounted just forward of the windshield brackets, and to stern, just ahead of the rear edge of the engine hatches. This is noted in the Materials Specification for 1941, as "4 Chrome Plated Cleats, #717, list at. The pre-war 17 Deluxes were delivered from the factory with 4 fender cleats as standard. But, as we're also always trying to fill in the blanks on some of these issues I'll share what I know, in hopes it has some relevance to post war Deluxes. I am always a bit slow to jump in on some of these issues, as I never know how much (or little) of my pre-war knowledge applies to post-war. Pete, I would love to see any documentation you may have.
